The Local Authors Festival at Salem Church Library on Saturday, May 23, 2026 was everything a literary community gathering should be — warm, welcoming, and full of people who believe stories matter. Here is my firsthand recap of the day.

The Turnout Was Real
Let me just say it plainly: Salem Church Library showed up.
With at least 30 authors representing a wide range of genres and voices, and more than 50 readers and community members coming through the doors, the energy in that room was something you could feel from the moment you walked in. This was not a small gathering. This was a community that takes its local writers seriously — and that means everything to an independent author.

Tables stretched across the room filled with books of every kind: fiction, nonfiction, children’s titles, poetry, memoir, Christian living, and yes, Black Western history and faith-driven storytelling. Every author had a story. Every reader who came through left with at least one new name on their reading list.

Meeting Authors Across Every Genre
One of the most rewarding parts of the day was the chance to connect with fellow authors — some writing in the same genres I do, some in completely different creative worlds.
There is something uniquely encouraging about sitting across from another writer who understands the process — the late nights, the rewrites, the quiet hope that a story will reach someone who needs it. We talked craft, publishing, community, and what it means to write with purpose. Those are the kinds of conversations that fuel the next book.

Whether your work sits on the literary fiction shelf, the inspirational section, or somewhere proudly in between, this festival brings writers together across those lines. That shared commitment to the page — that is the common ground.

Books Available at My Table
For those who missed the chance to stop by, I had signed copies of both titles available:
ICE: A Story of Love, Crime and Politics

A faith-tinged novel of ambition, moral complexity, and consequence. Perfect for readers of literary crime fiction with a moral compass. Available in the shop for $16.00.
Dark Prairie: Forged by Blood, Bound by Choice

A Black Western that honors unsung Black cowboys with a fast-paced action narrative and deep emotional roots. Available in the shop for $15.00.
Signed copies go fast at events. If you want a personalized copy, reach out directly and I will do my best to make it happen.
Thank You, Salem Church Library

A sincere and genuine thank-you to Salem Church Library and the entire team at Central Rappahannock Regional Library (CRRL/LibraryPoint) for hosting this event and creating the space for local authors to advertise, share their work, and connect with the community they write for.
Libraries are one of the last truly democratic spaces we have — free to enter, open to all, and still committed to the idea that reading changes lives. The fact that CRRL dedicates an entire event to celebrating local, independent authors says everything about the kind of institution they are. We are grateful for the opportunity to show our work and to be seen.
