My Lonesome Augustine Fox 5 interview on The LocaList SD is something I will carry for the rest of my life. But before I tell you what it meant — I have to be honest with you.
When I walked into the Fox 5 San Diego studios on the morning of June 18, 2026, and saw the lights, the cameras, the beach backdrop behind the chairs — I felt something I hadn’t fully anticipated. Something that went beyond nerves or excitement. It felt like arrival.
I am Lonesome B. Augustine — a faith-driven Black history author from Fredericksburg, Virginia. I’ve written books about Black cowboys and the American frontier. I’ve spoken at churches and schools. I’ve signed copies of Dark Prairie and ICE in community centers and book clubs. But that day, sitting across from Ashley Jacobs on The LocaList SD, telling the story of my work to a television audience — that was something else entirely.
This is my account of what happened, what I felt, and why this Lonesome Augustine Fox 5 interview matters — not just to me, but to the larger story I’ve been trying to tell.
The LocaList SD: San Diego’s Stage for Stories That Matter
The LocaList SD is a local lifestyle and culture segment on Fox 5 San Diego and KUSI News. Ashley Jacobs, the host, has built a platform that spotlights the people, businesses, and stories that make San Diego’s community worth paying attention to. When I learned this was the show I’d be appearing on, I understood immediately what that opportunity meant.
This wasn’t a generic interview slot. It was an invitation to speak directly to a community — San Diego residents, Fox 5 viewers, people flipping through channels on a Thursday morning who might not have picked up a book about Black cowboys and faith. The kind of people I write for, and sometimes never get to reach.
The interview was arranged by Publish Me Today and Booknality — two organizations that have championed my work and helped put it in front of audiences I couldn’t have reached on my own. I am grateful to both.
What We Talked About on The LocaList SD — Dark Prairie, ICE, and the Stories Nobody Told
Ashley Jacobs is a skilled interviewer. She made it easy to be honest.
We talked about Dark Prairie — the novel that launched my writing career as a full public voice. The book is set in post-Civil War Texas and follows a Black cowboy navigating a frontier that was simultaneously brutal and full of possibility. The history behind it is real: between 25% and 35% of all cattle drive cowboys in that era were Black men. Most Americans were never taught that. Dark Prairie is my answer to that erasure.
We also talked about ICE: A Story of Love, Crime and Politics — a very different book in setting and subject but rooted in the same commitment: take Black American history seriously, and tell it through characters whose faith is not window dressing but the engine of everything they do.
But what I remember most from that conversation is being asked why any of this matters. And I said what I believe: because when a Black child sees a man who looks like me on a television screen, talking about Black cowboys and faith and history — that child’s sense of what’s possible shifts. Not dramatically. Just quietly. A door cracks open that they didn’t know was closed.
That’s what I write for. That’s what I speak for.
“One of the Best Moments of My Life” — What the Lonesome Augustine Fox 5 Interview Meant
After the interview, someone asked me how I felt. I said it without thinking:
“The interview at Fox 5 was one of the best moments of my life. I was able to relay to the public how I felt in real time. That felt wonderful.”
I stand by that. And I want to explain it.
I’ve been a writer for a long time. Writing is a solitary act. You sit with characters, with history, with the weight of stories that deserve to be told — and you do the work alone, hoping it reaches someone. Every book signing, every speaking engagement, every review is a small confirmation that the work is landing somewhere. But a television appearance is different. It is immediate. It is real time. It is you, on camera, with no editing, saying: this is what I believe, this is what I’ve made, this is why it matters.
The Fox 5 studios at 4575 Viewridge Avenue in San Diego are professional and welcoming. The crew treated us like guests, not just content. Ashley Jacobs treated the conversation like it deserved her full attention — and it showed.
My wife was with me. She held both books — Dark Prairie and ICE — and in those moments, I felt the full weight of what we’ve built together. This writing life isn’t mine alone. It’s ours.
San Diego — A City That Welcomed Us
My wife and I made the trip into an experience. San Diego was generous to us. We visited family we hadn’t seen in too long. We walked the city, took in the coastline, and let ourselves enjoy what the work had made possible.
There is something about being in a city you don’t live in — where no one knows your name yet — and then walking into a television studio and telling your story. It makes the story feel bigger than your hometown, bigger than your zip code. It makes you realize that the history you’re trying to recover belongs to everyone, not just the people who already know your books.
That realization is a fuel source. I came home from San Diego with more fire than I left with.
Why Television Appearances Matter for Black Authors
I want to say something directly, because it matters.
There are not enough Black authors on television screens. Not enough Black writers being invited to sit down with mainstream media hosts and say, in public and on camera: this is my work, this is my history, this is what I’m contributing to American literature.
Every time a Black author appears on a platform like The LocaList SD, it pushes a door a little further open. Not just for that author. For every writer who comes after. This is why I’m looking forward to more televised interviews — for the door-pushing, for the proof that these stories belong in every medium, on every screen, before every audience.

They were written for exactly the kind of reader who watches The LocaList SD and wonders what other stories are out there that no one has told them about yet. There are many. I’m working on the next one.
